Le Marché aux Puces St-Ouen
The biggest flea market in Paris

Posted Thursday, April 6, 2006

Marché aux Puces St-Ouen, spreading over 75 acres between Porte de St-Ouen and Porte de Clignancourt, groups together several flea markets with Vernaison being the oldest. Located in the northern part of the 18th arrondissement, the market hosts more than 2500 stands and shops on winding alleyways selling everything from old boots to precious antiques. Walking north from the metro station you'll encounter some stalls selling mostly clothes and trinkets on avenue de la Porte de Clignancourt; don't mind those and walk north, pass under the enclosed bridge and make a left on rue de Rosiers - that's where the action is. Vintage furniture, china, tapestries, Art Deco ornaments or Art Nouveau pieces, clothes, shoes, rare books, watches, tableware, lighting fixtures, statues and paintings bulk together. You can even buy a staircase if you can find where to fit it in your home.

Some vendors speak a little English but it really helps if you try in French first and know what you're looking for. Vernaison, being the oldest and most traditional market, is considered the cheapest market also but you won't find many antique collectors rummaging around here. Marche Biron is considered more upscale selling luxury goods such as crystal chandeliers or vintage jewelry.

The market is open Saturday to Monday from 9am to 6pm. Arrive early to avoid the crowds as it really gets busy at noon and watch for pickpockets.
