Les Deux Magots
Famous literary cafe in St-Germain-des-Prés
Posted Tuesday, April 4, 2006
In summer, the terrace of Les Deux Magots is overflowing with both tourists and Parisians who come to sample the best hot chocolate in Paris, served in a delicate porcelain jug. Better than the chocolate is the location and the history of this place where the intellectuals of the early 20th century came to work and get involved in effervescent discussions. Verlaine, Rimbaud, Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, André Gide, Jean Giraudoux, Picasso and Hemingway are just some of the artists and writers that used to be patrons here. The cafe takes its name after the two wooden statues of Chinese men ("the magots of China") that adorn one of the cafe's pillars. The menu is comprised of salads, fresh fish dishes, quiches, pastries or ice cream.
