L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon
Joël Robuchon's new concept on dining

Posted Tuesday, April 4, 2006

Monsieur Joël Robuchon's atelier, opened a few years ago when he came out of his semi-retirement, is definitely not the classic elegant French restaurant but a revolutionary place with a joly atmosphere that makes Parisians line up outside its black glass doors. Spanish hams hanging over their heads, Mr Robuchon seats his clients on 42 tall red-leather stools around the two bars shaped like "U"s with views of the kitchen and the wine cellar. The cooks and waiters wear black and red outfits to complement the contemporary decor which is entirely laquered black and Chinese-red. The restaurant configuration creates opportunities for diners to talk among each other, share opinions and make comments upon the menu. Mr Robuchon encourages this casual dining atmosphere by interacting directly with the diners. You can graze the menu by having some of the dishes brought in small portions before having the main dishes in full-size. Some of Robuchon's specialties include spaghetti carbonara with cream and bacon from Alsace, delicately spiced steak tartare and vitello tonnato from Italy.

Reservations are taken only for the 11:30am and 6:30pm sittings so be prepared to wait in line. L'Atelier has a no smoking policy. Fixed-price menus are available.
