La Tour d'Argent
French haute cuisine with a view over the Seine

Posted Monday, April 3, 2006

La Tour d'Argent has become a Parisian institution over the years, a temple of classic French cuisine. The patrons can enjoy a spectacular view of the Notre-Dame cathedral and the Seine from the height of the six floors. The chefs are the best in Paris with duck but that doesn't mean the scallop salad with truffles or the lobster with citrus vinaigrette aren't heavenly. The specialty of the house is a duck based dish, of course. The Canard au sang, pressed duck served in its blood, comes with a certificate attesting the number of the duck. The restaurant has already broken the 1 million ducks barrier, counting around 1.2 million nowadays. Some of the most famous people in the world have served the numbered duck: Edward VII feasted on duck number 328 in 1890, Charlie Chaplin was served number 253,652 in 1955, Mick Jagger 531,147 in 1978, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman shared 759,216 in 1991. The extraordinary wine cellar, containing more than 400,000 bottles, holds some of the best vintages in Europe.

Reservations should be made far in advance. A fixed-price lunch is available for 70€. Formal attire is required. Restaurant is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays for lunch.
