Eiffel Tower
The symbol of Paris

Posted Tuesday, March 21, 2006

The Eiffel Tower, designed and built by engineer Gustave Eiffel has become Paris's landmark and most-visited attraction. It is the highest monument in Paris at about 1063 feet and 1665 stairs to the top. It weighs more than 10,000 tons and it is made of 18,038 pieces of puddle iron. It was built for the 1889 Universal Exhibition and it opened for the public on May 6. It is decidedly one of Paris's must-sees, an engineering masterpiece.

If you decide to visit the tower be prepared for crowds and long lines. You can either take the elevator to the top for 11 euros (up the first floor - 4,20 euros, up the second floor 7,70 euros) or climb the stairs to the second floor for 3,80 euros - probably one of the cheapest sightseeing options in Paris. There are 2 elevators that run every 8 minutes. On the first floor you can find exhibits and displays on the tower's history.

If you feel like dining, Eiffel Tower has 2 restaurants, the Altitude 95, on the first floor, and the Jules Verne, an upscale establishment on the second floor.
