Hotel Meurice
Extravagant 19th century hotel facing the Tuileries Gardens

Posted Tuesday, March 28, 2006

Open since 1835, the Meurice sits across the Tuileries Gardens right between Place de la Concorde and Louvre, on rue de Rivoli. Recently refurbished, the hotel keeps its French refined charm enhanced by the ornate interiors, crystal chandeliers and mosaic floors. Over the years, the Meurice welcomed illustrious guests like the Duchess of Windsor, Queen Victoria or Salvador Dali.

The 160 rooms and suites are individually decorated in a French-Empire style and feature antique canopy beds and sumptuous armchairs draped in noble fabrics like French and Italian brocades, hand-carved armoires and headboards. The bathrooms are a display of true luxury with marble floors and deep, spacious bathtubs. Rooms overlook the Louvre and Tuileries gardens or Montmartre with the gracious Basilica of Sacré-Coeur. The lavish Belle Etoile suite offers a 360 degree panoramic view of Paris.

Le Meurice, the hotel's gourmet restaurant, serves a French cuisine menu under the supervision of chef Yannick Alléno, winner of two Michelin stars. Le Jardin d’Hiver is a great place to have a light lunch or tea in the afternoon and marvel at the Art Nouveau-style glass roof, the palm trees and exotic flowers. Bar Fontainebleau, an English-style bar, offers an intimate ambiance and invites you to try the signature cocktails, the Fragolada and Mai Tai.
