Four Seasons Hotel George V
A combination of French refined luxury and top-of-the-line service offered by the Four Seasons

Posted Wednesday, March 29, 2006

It may have added "Four Seasons" to its name, but Parisians still call this splendid establishment "Hôtel George V", to remind us it is the city's distinctive symbol of luxury and glamour. American Joel Hillman initially opened the hotel in 1928 for the wealthy English-speaking clientele and named it in honor of George V of England. The Art Deco building was decorated with lavish furniture and art works that Hillman acquired; construction work and interior design reportedly cost him $31 million. In 1996 Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal of Saudi Arabia bought the George V, renovated it and opened it under the "Four Seasons" name.

Architect Richard Martinent and interior designer Pierre Yvess Rochon who were in charge with the renovation managed to add all the luxury accommodations while keeping its French character and grandeur. Ornate chandeliers, 17th century Flemish tapestries, wood panelings, bronze sculptures, 19th century French original paintings and spectacular flower arrangements by floral designer Jeff Leatham adorn the public areas.

The 184 rooms and 61 suites are decorated in tones of yellow or light blue with Louis XVI furniture covered in rich fabrics, tapestries and original paintings. The suites have private balconies and terraces with views of Parisian rooftops or the Eiffel Tower. The marble bathrooms are spacious, luxurious but functional at the time.

Le Cinq restaurant, awarded with 3 stars by the Michelin guide, is one of the greatest Parisian dining experiences. La Galerie is an excellent option for a light lunch or having tea while listening to a pianist play.
