Hotel Lutetia
Art Deco style hotel on the Left Bank

Posted Thursday, March 30, 2006

The Lutetia is renowned for being the first Art Deco hotel to be built in Paris. Opened in 1910 on the Left Bank, in St. Germain des Près district, it was popular at its time with writers and artists, accommodating famous guests like André Gide, Josephine Baker, Picasso or Matisse. Even general Charles de Gaulle spent his honeymoon here. Today, Lutetia lost a bit from the grandeur of its early days but that's just part of its charm and character. The location is perfect for shopping with the Bon Marché stores just in front of the hotel, as a base for discovering the city - it is in walking distance to the Orsay Museum, Notre Dame and the Louvre and close to a metro station - and for dining as Les Deux Maggots, Cafe De Flore, Brasserie Lipp and other cheaper lovely restaurants and cafes are close by.

Some of the 250 rooms and suites were renovated and redecorated by designer Sybille de Margerie who gave them a more modern look and the other ones kept their clasic Fench style. The standard rooms at 250 euros are quite small and overlook the interior courtyard but the deluxe rooms and suites, though pricier are more spacious with views of the Eiffel Tower and the Bon Marché stores. Bathrooms are in marble, some of them with separate shower. Amenities include hair dryers, mini bar, data port, safe, cable TV, air conditioning, direct dial telephone.

Dining options include gourmet restaurant Paris, brasserie Lutetia and piano bar Lutèce open at noon and smoking bar Ernest open in the evening. The live jazz evenings at the Ernest are quite popular.
